Epicyon - Facts and Figures
Name: Epicyon (Greek for more than a dog); pronounced EPP-ih-SIGH-on Habitat: Plains of North America Historical Epoch: Middle-Late Miocene (15-5 million years ago) Size and Weight: About five feet long and 200-300 pounds Diet: Meat Distinguishing Characteristics: Large size; quadrupedal posture; big-cat-like head About Epicyon Possibly the largest prehistoric dog that ever lived, Epicyon was a true canid, belonging to the same general family as wolves, hyenas and modern dogsââ¬âand was thus a different beast altogether from the non-canid creodont mammals (typified by the giant Sarkastodon) that ruled the North American plains for millions of years before the Miocene epoch. The largest species of Epicyon weighed in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 poundsââ¬âas much as, or more than, a full-grown human--and it possessed unusually powerful jaws and teeth, which made its head look more like that of a big cat than a dog or wolf. However, paleontologists dont know much about Epicyons feeding habits:à this megafauna mammalà may have hunted alone or in packs, and it may even have subsisted exclusively on already-dead carcasses, likeà a modern hyena. Epicyon is known by three species, all of which were discovered in western North America in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. The lightest variant, Epicyon saevus, was named by the famous American paleontologist Joseph Leidy, and for a time was classified as a species of Aelurodon; adults only weighed about 100 pounds fully grown. E. haydeni was also named by Leidy, and has been synonymized not only with Aelurodon, but with the even more obscure Osteoborus and Tephrocyon as well; this was the largest Epicyon species, weighing more than 300 pounds. The most recent addition to the Epicyon family, E. aelurodontoides, was discovered in Kansas in 1999; you can tell by its species name that it was also close kin to Aelurodon!

Media Representation of Gender Roles - 1954 Words
Historically, social and feminist scholars have focused on media representations of gender roles and how they affect the lived experiences of women (Green, 2013; Soulliere, 2006). Gender is widely considered to be a cultural rather than strictly biological creation, and it is often constructed and represented through popular culture media such as advertisements, magazines, and television (Soulliere, 2006). While women have made great strides in expanding the culturally acceptable definition of femininity (or femininities), masculinity continues to be narrowly defined and policed by society (Soulliere, 2006; Tragos, 2009). This evidence of asymmetrical change in popular culture gender role portrayals suggests that more effort should be given to examining the representation of men and masculinities in media, and its influence on the lived experience of men. Media is responsible for disseminating many messages about gender via gendered presentations, and plays a key role in perpetuating a dominant hegemonic masculinity, all while discouraging alternative masculinities (Soulliere, 2006). The dominant hegemonic masculinity reflects the cultural ideal and normative definition of manhood in North American society, and is often characterized and conceptualized by violence, aggression, emotional restraint, toughness, risk-taking, physical strength, power, competitiveness, and achievement (Soulliere, 2006). Media representations of gender in North American both reflect the dominantShow MoreRelatedEffect Of Gender And Gender Representation On Media1735 Words à |à 7 PagesThe effect of gender and gender representation in media has been widely researched in various academic disciplines, including anthropology and communication studies. Engineering Essays free essay sample
As a child, I always wanted to know how and why things were, but adults, fed up with constant interrogations, often brushed me off by suggesting that I ask someone else or look up the answer myself. This was before I had access to the Internet, so I turned to books to tell me the meaning of new words or what the Earth looks like from space. I remember one day after school in fifth grade, I curled up on the floor with a dictionary, intent to learn every word in it. I donââ¬â¢t believe I ever got past the cââ¬â¢s, but this was only the beginning of my passion for reading, and eventually writing. When I turned eight, I decided I was finally old enough to pursue my dream of becoming an author. Inspired by my stuffed animals, I spent hours writing and illustrating a plotless sixty-page ââ¬Å"novelâ⬠about a cat, a dog, and a bird that embarked on a ââ¬Å"grand endvencher. We will write a custom essay sample on Engineering Essays or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page â⬠At the time, convinced that it would soon be published and make me famous, the only future I could see for myself was that of a successful writer. Unfortunately, my parents crushed that dream when they kindly suggested that I wait until I was a little older before trying to publish something. I took their advice and disheartened with reading, turned to other ways to learn what algebra is and why I cant feel myself careening through space with the rest of Earthââ¬â¢s inhabitants. The hours I previously spent reading I now spent outside ââ¬â I had resolved to learn everything through the power of my own observations. But theres only so much one can figure out through pure speculation ââ¬â I inevitably turned back to questioning adults about whether we all perceive colors the same or about the causes of the forces I experienced while swinging at the playground. My grandparents began calling me their little scientist, and I took pride in the term immediately. Being an author would be cool, but being a scientist sounded even cooler. Six years later and entering high school, I no longer had dreams of becoming an author, but instead of becoming a scientist, although I still didnââ¬â¢t know what scientists actually do. My sophomore year of high school, I stumbled across Advanced Competitive Science (ACS), a class teaching the introductory aspects of engineering. (Until that point, I had never even heard of engineering, which I only suspected meant a career highly involved with driving trains.) I enjoyed the hands-on experience and signed up for level two the next year, already thinking that I would enjoy becoming an engineer some day. On a whim, I also signed up for an AP Language and Composition class that caught my interest ââ¬â I had never completely forgotten how much I had wanted to become an author while growing up. The next year, I found myself in an odd situation because although I still loved everything about engineering: the visualization, the problem solving, the math, I was spending more time at night thinking about essays for my AP Comp class, not thinking about my search and rescue robot. Every day, I waited all morning for AP Comp to begin, and after it ended, I waited for the day to end so I could go home and revise my essays. Writing became an obsession, and I was surprised that I didnt mind that. I found writing to be a lot like engineering, contrary to what any staunch writer or engineer might testify: there is never a right answer, creativity is a must, donââ¬â¢t waste words/materials, and a truly good finished product requires many hours of work. Despite my discovery, I quickly learned that there really isnââ¬â¢t a good career for an engineer who loves to write or a writer who loves to engineer. With limited space in my schedule this year, I made the decision to pursue engineering instead of journalism for my elective space, but Iââ¬â¢m still conflicted: should I build things with my words or with my hands? Maybe Ill have to compromise ââ¬â the world could use some more essays about writers driving trains.

Animal Farm Essays (739 words) - Marxist Theorists, Old Bolsheviks
Animal Farm George Orwell's novel Animal Farm does an excellent job of drawing parallels from the situation leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917. Animal Farm is a satire that uses its characters to symbolize leaders of the Russian Revolution. The animals of Manor Farm, the setting of this novel, which symbolizes Russia, overthrow their human master after years of mistreatment. Led by the pigs, the farm animals continue to do their work, only with more pride, knowing that they are working for themselves, as opposed to working for their human master, Farmer Jones. Slowly over time the pigs gain power and take advantage of the other animals. They gain so much power that they become just as power hungry and corrupt as their human master. The theme in the novel being that in every society there are leaders who will, if given the chance, likely abuse their position. Old Major is a prize white boar who helps point out to the animals that no animal in England is free. He continues to tell the animals that the their labor is stolen by man, who benefits alone. The animals in return get near nothing, just enough to keep them away from starvation. Old Major gave many speeches to the farm animals about hope and the future. He is the main animal who got the rebellion started even though he died before it actually began. Old Major's role compares to Lenin and Marx whose ideas would spark the communist revolution. Lenin became the leader and teacher of the working class in Russia, and their determination to struggle against capitalism. Like Old Major, Lenin and Marx wrote essays and gave speeches to the working class poor. The working class in Russia, as compared with the barnyard animals in Animal Farm, were a laboring class of people that received low wages for their work. Old major tells the animals that the source of the problem is man, they must overthrow man to abolish tyranny and hunger. Soon Old Major does die, but his words still echo in the hearts of all the animals. With the leadership of the pigs, the smartest animals, they repel against the human and gain complete control of the farm. This would symbolize the Russian Revolution. Another parallel represented in the book is Farmer Jones. His character is similar to the politician Czar Nicholas who treated his people similar to how Farmer Jones treated his animals. The animal rebellion on the farm was started because Farmer Jones was a drunk who never took care of the animals. This made them very angry, fed by the words of Old Major the animals decided to rebel like the Russians. Czar Nicholas was a very weak man who treated his people similar to how Farmer Jones treated his animals. The Czar made his working class people very uneasy with the way he used his authority and preached all the time, and the people suffered and finally demanded reform by rebelling. The animal Napoleon can be compared as a character representing Stalin in Russia. Both were very mean looking, didn't talk very much but always got what they wanted through force. In one part of the book Napoleon had the dogs charge Snowball, another animal, as soon as he thought that the pigs were becoming corrupt. Stalin became the Soviet Leader after the death of Lenin. He was underestimated by his opponents who always became his victims, and he had one of the most ruthless, regimes in history. In was not till very many years later that the world found out about the many deaths that Stalin created in Russia during the Revolution. Another strong parrael would is the character of Snowball with the Russian leader Trotsky. Snowball was very enthusiastic and was a leader who organized the defense of the farm. He gave speeches and instructions but was not very beneficial. All the other animals liked him, but he was outsmarted by Napoleon. Trotsky and Stalin's relationship was very much like Snowball's and Napoleons. Trotsky organized the Red Army and gave speeches and everyone in Russia thought he would win power over Stalin. After Lenin's death Trotsky lost all his power to Stalin and was expelled from the communist party. George Orwell has created a masterpiece which is excellent if it is read without any prior knowledge to the situation in Russia. However the added element does wonders for this novel. Orwell is a genius and he has cleverly hidden the satire in such an excellent way, that

Overview of London Ambulance System (Las) Disaster, 1992 Essay Example
Overview of London Ambulance System (Las) Disaster, 1992 Essay Example Overview of London Ambulance System (Las) Disaster, 1992 Essay Overview of London Ambulance System (Las) Disaster, 1992 Essay The London Ambulance Service (LAS) is worldââ¬â¢s largest free ambulance service covering an area of more than 600 square miles with a population of 7 million people. On any given day, LAS transported more than 5,000 patients and handled more than 2,000 telephone calls. LAS employed over 2,700 people, including an operational staff of roughly 2,000 people. (Cited http://bobpinchbeck. com/College/Work/Papers/DispatchingFailure. htm) In the mid-1980s, the LAS emergency despatch system was run completely manually. The details of a call, such as the location and type of incident, were noted on paper and sent to a central collection point where duplicate incidents will be eliminated. Call details were then given to an allocator who selected which vehicle and crew to send. The details were next passed to a dispatcher who contacted the ambulance driver by radio or phone. Problems arise when paper details are lost, they were not able to track incident and there are difficulties in tracing how the original call had been dealt with. In order to improve the quality of the service, they introduced a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system in 1992. It was developed by two companies, Apricot Computers, a UK based hardware manufacturer, and System Options, a small UK software developer. CAD is a method of dispatching services assisted by computer. The idea of the CAD system is that people from the dispatch centre are able to view and understand the status of all the units being dispatched and provides tools and mechanisms for monitoring the dispatcher so calls can be handled more efficiently. The system consists of several modules that provide services at multiple levels in a dispatch centre and in the field of public safety. These services include the following; Call input, dispatching, status maintenance Handling incident details and locations Field unit status and tracking Call resolution and disposition It also include interfaces that permits the software to provide services to dispatchers, call takers and field personnel with respect to control and use of analogue radio and telephony equipment. (Cited www. erichmusick. com/writings/06/las_failure. html) The London Ambulance Service decided to put their new CAD system in to operation on October 26th, 1992. After a few hours into operation it became observable to the ambulance crews and control room staff that there is something wrong with the new system. The crisis was a high event in the UK news during that time, which claimed a number of patients have died as a result of the system. The following problems occurred within the CAD system when it was first in operation: Patientââ¬â¢s emergency calls that were accepted appeared to be getting lost in the system caused an increasing number of call duplications. Rise in number of calls led to the callers being held by the call-queuing system for up to 30 minutes before they were dealt with. At some point earlier calls were overwritten by newer emergency calls coming into the system, leaving a large number of unanswered calls which caused a number of exception messages. The ambulance allocation system failed to recognize certain roads. Staffs had to revert to using a map and telephone to deal with ambulance dispatches, which ultimately led to more delays. There was a communication failure between the ambulances and the system. Ambulance either arrived late, did not arrive at all or arrive two at the same time. However, his painstaking effort to be liked by his colleagues is in vain as he only appears pathetic and absurd. Other notable main characters are: Pam Beesly, the office receptionist; Jim Halpert, a sales representative; Dwight Schrute, the assistant to the regional manager; and Ryan Howard, a temporary employee. Economically speaking, opportunity cost is defined as "the cost of something in terms of an opportunity forgone or the most valuable forgone alternative" (Opportunity Costs 1). In The Office it is apparent that Jim Halpert foregoes the opportunity of securing better working alternatives when he continued working for Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company. The economic hegemony of the United States is currently being tain... It is estimated that the budget allocated to the war reaches $1 trillion which could have been used to finance economic and social projects such as livelihood, housing, and education. Thus, the opportunity cost of going to war can be stated as the social and economic benefit which could have been derived from the investments in socio-economic projects. 2. Law of Supply and Demand The issue of downsizing has been recurring in the episodes of the TV show. It should be noted that downsizing stems from the fact that the supply of labor in the economy is much higher than the actual demand requiring some adjustments through employee lay-offs. The same issue is faced by employees in the nation. The trade liberalization has eliminated national boundaries facilitating the mobility of job and investments. Business process outsourcing has become a trend channeling jobs to other countries where the cost of labor is lower like China, India, and Philippines thereby lowering the demand for labor in the United States. Recently, the customer service department of large business organizations like Dell, HP, and IBM has been deployed in these countries lowering the demand for US labor. This movement in demand changes the equilibrium by decreasing supply through downsizing. Works Cited "About the Office." NBC Website. 2007. April 18, 2007 "The Office." Why Would You Study Philosophy Philosophy Essay
Why Would You Study Philosophy Philosophy Essay Several weeks ago, before the start of the 2013 winter semester my roommate asked me why I would take a philosophy class. My answer was a very typical response for a college student, credit hours. Later, I thought about my answer, there are hundreds of classes I could have taken. I could have taken astronomy, psychology, or an economics course. Each subject seems interesting enough, why did I choose philosophy? I found my answer on the first day of class. I took philosophy, because I didnt know anything about it. The thought experiments we did on the first day triggered an interest. At first, maybe it wasnt as overwhelming as the idea that there are billions of galaxies each containing billions or even trillions of stars. That it is possible for a psychopath to be conditioned into simulating the feeling of empathy. Even that from an economic standpoint it is impossible to eliminate pollution. Philosophy is a abstract idea to study, but it is extremely interesting. The word philosophy comes from the Greek word philosophia which means love of wisdom. The key to philosophy is to be about being very critical towards any ideas, including things that seem certain. A philosopher has to ask critical questions or abstract questions on any subject. The reason these questions are asked is for the pursuit of the absolute truth. We have to think critically about everything we believe to be true, and even the thing we dont. The four branches of philosophy are metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and logic. Each branch asks a specific question. Metaphysics asks, What is? Epistemology asks, What do we know? Ethics asks, How should we act? Finally logic asks, What is the reason? Each is essential to the study of philosophy, but epistemology is the most important for answering the question Why study Philosophy? We all as individuals know that we exist in one way or another. In our existence we want to make ourselves better. One of the ways we improve is through s tudy. Studies generally make us believe we are increasing our knowledge, leading us to a certain, understood, clear world. Just by studying philosophy it brings us closer to the truth. Sometime after my roommate asked why I would take a philosophy class, I found myself reading a letter titled Why explore space? The letter is addressed to Sister Mary Jucunda, whom asked the question why spend billions of dollars on exploring space when there are so many starving children on Earth. Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger, NASAs Marshall Space Flight Centers associate director (1970) responded with several good reasons including a story that took place some 450 years ago. A count lived in a small town in Germany; he was much appreciated because he would give a large part of his wealth to the poor in the town. The letter reads, One day, the count met a strange man. He had a workbench and little laboratory in his house, and he labored hard during the daytime so that he could afford a few hours every evening to work in his laboratory. The strange man created small lenses that he used to look at very small creatures under strong magnification. The count amazed by this invited the man to mov e his laboratory to the castle and to become a member of the counts household. This angered the townspeople when they realized that the count was wasting his wealth on a purposeless hobby. The people were suffering from plague and were begging for more money. The count promised to give them as much as he could afford, but said that he would also support the man and his work, because he knew someday something would come out of it. Something very good did come out of the mans work, he invented a simple microscope, the invention that has given the most to medicine, and helped eliminate the plague. So the count, by putting some of his wealth into research helped the people more than directly giving money to them. Using time, money, and effort on things that may seem abstract at the time may lead to incredible things. Studying philosophy is similar to the counts story, instead of studying more practical topics like language or mathematics studying philosophy will help us answer questions about ourselves that we have been asking for centuries. When we are answer some of these questions, we will know what really matters, again itll bring us closer to a certain truth. Now that I have started to understand the most basic ideas in philosophy, I am better equipped to answer my roommates question. I need this class, philosophy teaches something that no other course can. Philosophy teaches you to think for yourself, to be critical of theories, and to be critical of familiar and foreign ideas. Every educated person needs to take a philosophy course so they can understand what they are learning in all other subjects. Philosophy is also intriguing when questions about reality are asked. Questions in the metaphysics branch of philosophy may be the most abstract, but they play an important role in determining what we are. The idea that maybe, none of this actually exists is staggering to think about, but it is fascinating and is something people should think about. Just knowing the little I do about the subject matter of philosophy has caught my interest and will lead to me advancing and taking more courses like this one. My roommate know fully knows why I chose to take this course. I now know why it is essential for any student to take a philosophy class, perhaps even my roommate will take a philosophy course next chance he gets. Philosophy may seem slightly abstract now but in my future I can see myself using it to critically and logically think through situations. The reason why to study philosophy is to make yourself more critical in your pursuit of the truth.

The Red Curtain Trilogy by Baz Lurhmann Essay -- Papers
The Red Curtain Trilogy by Baz Lurhmann On The Red Curtain Trilogy, which were all directed by Baz Lurhmann, all of the films began with red curtains opening up like in a theatre to 'reveal' the film. In 'Strictly Ballroom' the scene opens with silhouettes of the main characters dancing, waiting for a performance to start (?) then walking excitedly onto screen which starts the movie. For 'Romeo & Juliet' the opening shot is a lot more fast and furious. The film begins with a plain black screen, then a television screen appears. the television screen, that is showing a news report, appears and draws closer to the viewer. The reporter is reciting the prologue of the play. Accelerated scenes from the film are shown, with words and sentences in red lettering from the prologue, this scene reminds me of a trailer for a film. The story then starts, showing both families of the story, their traits and portrays the friction between the Montagues and Capulets. For Moulin Rouge, when the red curtain begins to open, a conductor appears and begins conducting the music for the film, to give a feel of being at a theatre. Then the town where Moulin Rouge is set is introduced to us, and the main character is introduced, and then begins to tell the story. The Music in 'Strictly Ballroom' for the opening sequence is slow, quiet calming music, but as it becomes closer to the actual beginning of the film, the music becomes louder and more extravagant, and then for the 'salsa' scene the music is very jazzy and upbeat. The music for this film is very well done because it portrays exactly what is happening on the screen at the time. The Music is mor... ...gant things which you would never see at theatres. I think my favourite opening would be the one for Romeo and Juliet. The opening is fast paced and has bright colours. It contains scenes form the film which seems to pull the viewer in to watching the film. The films differ from each other as well, as Strictly ballroom begins with red curtains opening to the beginning of the film. Romeo and Juliet decided to not use the Red curtain theme, although because it is based on a play, there was already a feeling of 'red curtain' (play) about it. Moulin rouge used the red curtain idea and extended it by showing the conductor which you would see at a theatre or musical, which Moulin rouge was intending to be. Overall, I think the openings for the Baz Lurhmann Trilogy are gripping and make you want to see the rest of the film.

19th Century industrial leaders Essay
Many have debated that the industrial leaders following the 19th Century were ââ¬Å"Robber Barronââ¬â¢sâ⬠. However, in this very competitive time period, many new businesses were being formed. It took talented businessmen such as Vanderbilt, Carnegie, and Rockefeller to get ahead and keep the companies running, building America into what it is today, the most powerful nation in the world. Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) was a classic Market Entrepreneur, succeeding by creating and marketing a superior product at a low cost. He was a key figure in breaking the steamboat monopoly in the waters around New York City; in the transatlantic steamship business; in the east coast to west coast steamship business; and the builder of the New York Central system, which, in effect, replaced the Erie Canal. Vanderbilt set the example for future ââ¬Å"Industrial Statesmanâ⬠by hard work and dedication; being fiercely competitive, willing to cut prices to get business; reliability, meaning repeat customers; the ability to master the details of a new business and to act boldly when necessary. When he died he was the richest man in America ($105m) and he left a high quality quadrupled track railroad that played a key role in the development of the Midwestern United States. See more: Satirical essay about drugs In 1873, Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) became convinced that the future of industry was in the manufacture and use of steel. Concentrating on steel production, he began his acquisition of firms, which were later consolidated into the Carnegie Steel Company. His success was due in part to efficient business methods, to his able lieutenants, and to close alliances with railroads. By 1900, the Carnegie Steel Company controlled iron mines, coke ovens, ore ships, and railroads. It was these circumstances that the U.S. Steel Corp. was formed to buy Carnegie out. In 1901 he transferred possession for $500 million, the largest personal transaction ever made, and retired from business. Carnegie believed that the wealthy had an obligation to give back to society, so he donated much of his fortune to causes like education and peace. John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) was the guiding force behind the creation and development of the Standard Oil Company, which grew to dominate the oilà industry and became one of the first big trusts in the United States. Rockefeller was naturally cautious and only undertook a business venture when he calculated that it would be successful. After he carefully weighed a course of action he would then act quickly and boldly to see it through. He had iron nerves and would carry through very complicated deals without hesitation. This combination of caution, precision, and resolve soon brought him attention and respect in the industrial community. Rockefeller also was one of the first major philanthropists in the U.S., establishing several important foundations and donating a total of $540 million to charitable purposes. ââ¬Å"Robber Barronââ¬â¢sâ⬠to those who didnââ¬â¢t reap the benefits of these industrial empires but these ââ¬Å"Industrial Statesmenâ⬠knew what it took to succeed in business. Each had their own characteristics that enabled them to make tough decisions and beat the competition. That Competition has inspired the businessmen of today, and fueling todayââ¬â¢s industry and technology.

In this essay I will being talking about the experiences and how it feels to be in an Earthquake. à à à à à à à The most devastating earthquake on record happened in 2004. This earthquake was a 9.1 magnitude on the richter scale and created a Tsunami that put together killed about 230,000 people. This earthquake had several survivors who shared their experiences with the internet, these are just a few of them. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Earthquake: Devastating Natural Disaster" essay for you Create order à à à à à à à There was a young individual named Louis Cryer who was 18 at the time and survived this incredible natural disaster. He talks about living in a hotel with multiple stories where him and his mom were living on the second floor when the earthquake hit. He said that the tsunami hit so fast that they had know time to get out there hotel. The water was destroying walls and buildings with its sheer force. Louis and his mom tried to help people get to high ground. He even said that he had to carry an older person who they thought broke her back to highground. They ended up going to a temple that was structurally sound and above the huge waves. Louis said that the only plus from this experience was that it brought people together and it did not matter if you were a certain religion or not everyone was checking on each other. à à à à à à à There was another set of people that survived this insane tidal wave. There names were Tom and Arlette who were on holiday. They were having breakfast at the time of the Earthquake and said that the waiters were pointing at the sea. Everyone thought that it was not harmful and went out to take pictures. Tom knew this was not just any wave though and he grabbed his wifes hand and they ran for highground. Tom and Arlette where running for their lives as the wave was not far behind. They had made it to highground but other people were not so lucky. When everything settled they got there truck and loaded wounded people in the back. They did not want to go down to the beach though because they knew it would be scattered with dead corpses. Another gigantic Tsunami hits soon after and most people had made it to safety by then so it was not as devastating as the first time. After the second wave Tom and Arlette stayed on high ground for a few hours before startin g their long journey home. à à à à à à à The final experience was kay and her partner. They were snorkeling when the earthquake hit. They were told to come back on the boat when the Tai people noticed the water was being displaced. If they did not get on the boat they would have been swept away and most likely killed. They had no idea how devastating the Tsunami was until they got a call from the shore that told them that. If Kay and her fiance did not go snorkeling that day or overslept, they could have been part of the have of the people who were killed in there hotel. The boat they were on had saved their lives and it was also a safe place to sleep over night because that was safer than going on the mainland. They stayed on the boat until the next morning when they were picked up by a military airplane and taken to safety. It was not until that morning when she realized how devastating the earthquake was with a soup of debris all over. à à à à à à à There was another website that had the story of Christine Lang. She was out with her brothers significant other when the giant wave hit. She remembers people running for their lives away from the ocean as she heard this terrible noise. She thought there island was under attack. When she looked at the ocean there was a huge black wall of water. While Lang was running she was swept off her feet and got caught in the wave. She said it felt like she was inside a giant washing machine with the islands debris. She thought for sure that she was dead, but than Lang started getting very angry and did not want to die so she swam up as fast as she could. After that Lang blacks out and wakes up under water. She thought that the top was about 40 meters above her because of the pressure on her ears. When she came up at the top there was a floating door that she could float on. This was the first time she was able to see how badly the earthquake affected her area. After that she was pulled up onto a roof of a building that was still intact. Lang was able to see everything from up there and saidà It honestly felt like the end of the world. Lang learned from this experience to never to take life for granted because you never know when it can just be washed away. à à à à à à à As you can see Earthquakes are one of the most devastating natural disasters on the planet. These stories of people surviving the 2004 Earthquake/Tsunami were all true. Always be careful about earthquakes because you never know when they could be big or small, or even create a giant Tsunami. This was how earthquakes feel by Kyler Andersen.

Culture A Personal Interview With A Person Whose Culture...
Culture is too much of a broad topic to be explained in one phrase. Rather itââ¬â¢s not only defined as shared beliefs, values, religions and attitudes, but itââ¬â¢s also categorized as, in scientific terms, as maintaining a group of tissues and cells that are in conditions suitable for growth. In other words, just as scientific terminology defines culture to be the conditions suitable for tissue growth, the definition of social culture is conditions suitable for growth in communication and relations. The objective of this essay is to address differences in culture which is demonstrated from a personal interview with a person whose culture is different than mine. More specifically, I will define how culture branches out into subcategories like power distribution, orientation, avoidance, context, proximities, and intercultural competence (Verderber Verderber, 2012). Power distribution is expectations and acceptance of how power is shared unevenly. In correlation to this, there is high power-distance and low power-distance. High power-distance is natural, itââ¬â¢s the recognition of higher and lower power. In other words, people within the group understand and respect who has high power and who does not. Places where high power-distance is practiced is the Middle East, Malaysia, Guatemala, Venezuela and Singapore. Low power-distance is the opposite, rather everyone within the group expects power to be given and respected evenly. No one stands higher than anyone else. The process of clinical reasoning developed by Levett Jone is the cycle of linked and ongoing clinical situations (Dalton et al. 2015). The paper deals with the case study of Leonard who is presented to the acute medical ward after fall. The report discusses Leonards falls and other health risk factors using the reasoning cycle framework. The report further critically evaluates the best-practice assessment tools appropriate for the case. Lastly, the report presents the support given to Leonard applying the person-centred approach while meeting the obligations as health professional. He was not coping with his illness prior to his admission. His admission history shows mental and behavioural disorder due to alcohol dependence, a decubitus ulcer on the shin of his left leg, anaemia, industrial deafness, some evidence of urinary incontinence, mild hypotension, lower limb oedema, and regular falls. After his wife death, Leonard has lost support system. He lives in a single storey house, with four steps to the front and two steps at the back with no rails. He lives with his housemate, who is mentally ill and rarely home. He receives mild support from his two elder sisters. Over the last six months, he is unable to carry his activities of daily living independently. In addition, he has some evidence of urinary incontinence and lower limb oedema. He had a Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 28/30, but appears to have little insight into his problems and also exhibits motor planning difficulties. In addition, Leonard also has industrial deafness as he worked as boilermaker in a very noisy factory. The patient denies support services at home; however, he is keen to return home. The cause of physical deterioration was due to range of manual and labouring jobs. He is mostly restricted to home with no entertainment. Process of information Leonard has severe risk of fall in future as he his physically fragile. His physical frailty is also evident from his need of walking frame for mobility. Recently, his functioning has detoriated due to which he is not able to perform his activities of daily living independently. Due to dyspnoea, anorexia, arthritis in his lower back, mild hypotension, he is at risk of poor physiologic condition and poor mobility (Shen et al. 2015). According to Soenen and Chapman (2013. P. 643) lack of grab rails on the toilet is adding to the risk of fall. Adding to the risk is his muscle weakness, poor balance and risk of gait. MMSE score of 28/30 is indicative of normal cognition. However, Motor planning difficulties and confusion can lead to frequent accidents and decrease confidence (Schoene et al. 2014). He needs dietitian to maintain healthy nutritional status, as he is anorexic and anaemic. His alcoholic liver disease also increases the risk of gastrointestinal tract upset. His symptoms of dyspnea increase the risk of respiratory diseases (Yeluru et al. 2016). Leonard has poor coordination and is not mentally alert. It is evident from his poor planning of tasks and inability to get dressed (Mihaljcic et al. 2015). He lacks support and care needed as he lives alone with his housemate too has mental illness. He receives inadequate support and assistance from his two elder sisters. He was in bereavement after his wifes death due to cancer. It may have caused him to developed fear of hospitals. This fear is depriving him of receiving adequate physical and mental health care (Keyes et al. 2014). His alcohol dependence is also the outcome of his bereavement and has caused decompensate liver disease. He lacks love, belongingness and affection, which is decreasing his coping with illness ( Feng et al. 2014). Lack of family members support and hearing impairment decreases social life and depression. It decreases functional and emotional status. Leonard has low energy to take part in recreational activities such as gardening and fishing. Financial constraints in addition to illness may be adding to the depression (Roets-Merken et al. 2015). In conclusion, Leonard has high risk of fall. In addition to that, other health risk factors of Leonard include Increased risk of mortality due to alcoholic liver disease, Decreased independency to perform activities of daily living, Development of depression and anxiety, Neglecting personal hygiene, Risk of gastrointestinal tract upset Risk of respiratory disease Risk of poor social connectedness due to hearing impairment, poor mobility and motor planning difficulties Three best-practice assessment tools appropriate for this case The three best practice assessment tools appropriate for this case are Falls Risk Assessment Tool or FRAT, Mini-mental state examination or MMSE, and Alcohol use screening assessment tool. The best practice assessment tools for Leonard for his fall are Peninsula Health FRAT. It is commonly used in Australia for elderly people living in community (Hill et al. 2016). The study evaluating the reliability and validity of FRAT has been published in Cattelani et al. (2015). FRAT has three sections. The first section assesses falls risk status followed by the second section consisting of risk factor checklist and the last section dealing with action plan. The tool requires approximately 15-20 minutes. The tool has criterion that is Medium risk: score of 1215 and a High risk: score of 1620. This assessment tool gives detailed information on the underlying factors contributing to the patients fall. It serves as screening test only The best practice assessment tools for cognition are MMSE. This tool is effective for grading the cognitive state of the client. The tool gives information on the degree of cognitive impairment (out of 30 if the score is 21-24 then it is mild impairment, 10-20 as moderate and The third assessment tool appropriate for Leonard is the Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Instrument Geriatric Version (SMAST-G). The instrument has scoring system where a score of 2 or more responses for Yes indicates the alcohol dependency problem. This tool is the first step to develop interventions and referral to treatment (Taylor et al. 2014). Nurses can use the scores to determine the degree to cut alcohol intake when scored high above the recommended state. In older adults the score helps to determine the risk of depression, anxiety, gastrointestinal problems. The instrument can only be used for screening and has been commonly used for older adults who are drinking at higher levels. The tool has been found to have high sensitivity and specificity. The feasibility and the acceptability of the tool has been tested and its reliability and validity has been published in Randall-James et al. (2015) Person-centred approach to support Leonards rights In nursing practice, person-centred care is essential to improve patients health outcomes. As a nurse, focus will be put on Leonards individual needs and goals. The family member of the client will be involved as appropriate. His right of autonomy will be ensured by involving him in making heath related decisions. His rights to access health care information, treatment options and express personal concerns will be maintained. The patients right to dignity will be maintained by knowing the patient as an individual, being responsive, and respecting his values, needs and preferences. While caring and promoting physical and emotional comfort emphasis will be given on his freedom of choice. Patients Privacy will be respected while caring and confidentiality of the information will be protected. The standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia in respect to the code of ethics will be complied. The standards set by the board will be strictly followed for providing the right care to the patient considering the spiritual, cultural and ethnic factors (Gray et al. 2016). Conclusion The paper has highlighted the health risk factors of Leonard supporting with literature. It has discussed the effective assessment tools for Leonard. In conclusion, nurses need effective clinical reasoning skills to identify the health risk factors and priority needs of patient. Nurse must be aware of the necessary tools for health assessment of patients to develop effective care plan. Nurses must protect patients rights, as it is important for their satisfaction of health care services. Nurses need to be competent in implementing the person centred approach and must be efficient in placing the patients needs above those identified as priorities by the heath cafe professional. There Are Many Bands And Different Kinds Of Music I Like To Listen To.
There are many bands and different kinds of music I like to listen to. I like to listen to many different bands and songs. When I listen to music I listen for the beat as long as listen for the lyrics. Even with all the different types of music around I mainly like to listen to hard rock. I like to listen because of the hard guitars and the streaming drums. Music to me is a way to relax. I enjoy listening to music. I listen to it so much now in many different places that it is a thing I really do not notice anymore. For this abstract there were many songs that I had to choose from. The types of songs that I chose were songs that make me feel a certain way every time I hear them. The three songs that I chose were songs that I have come to like and not songs that plays every two seconds on the radio. The first song that I chose is by a group called Nine Inch Nails. They are a pretty heavy music group. I chose a song that just come off their most recent album called The Fragile. The name of the song is called the wretched. I think this song means many different things. This song is a more serious depressing song. I think it has to do with someone who is having a real hard time. They are stuck in a hole and cannot really get out. This person has been pushed down and cannot really get back up. This song kind of makes me feel like it cannot always be good sometimes. I think there can be very many ways to express this song in many different ways but the lyrics made this song so good. It is so good because it does not just talk about being in a gang and talking about killing or beating someone. I like the way the lyrics come out. The next song is from the same group and same cd. The song is the fragile. This is a lighter kind of song. Even though I really do not like the typical kind of love song, this song kind of really stands out to me. I like how this song does not just talk about leaving someone of they are not perfect but staying with them and helping them. This song to me talks about someone that they love and everything has not really gone to well. Everything is falling apart and this person won't let it. This person has gone through the same thing and wont let it happen again. I like the lyrics and the beat is really good. The third song I chose is from the same CD and band is well. If had to bring our favorite CD off all time this would be the CD I would bring. The third song I chose is even deeper. I like this song very well and the meaning of the song is very clear. This song is about a relationship that has fallen apart. This person wants to leave but they cannot and they always come back. They are lost and the always can't stay way. I think this person is trying to overcome this other person but they just stay. Bibliography dave

Sarbanes-Oxley Act Article Essay Essays
Sarbanes-Oxley Act Article Essay Essays Sarbanes-Oxley Act Article Essay Essay Sarbanes-Oxley Act Article Essay Essay Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley ActThis article reappraisal is on the article written by David S. Addington called ââ¬Å"Congress Should Repeal or Fix Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to Help Create Jobs. â⬠The Heritage Foundation published the article on September 30 2013. In the article. the writer addresses concerns among companies remaining in conformity with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The writer indicates that subdivision 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley act has caused a fiscal load on companies. Companies spend a big sum of money to remain in conformity with the ordinances on subdivision 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Furthermore. companies could utilize the money spent on scrutinizing fiscal records to put in more concern lines and make more occupations ( Additon. 2011 ) . Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act requires companies to include a statement of the duty of the company direction for ââ¬Å"establishing and keeping an equal internal control construction and processs for fiscal reportingâ⬠along with their study filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission ( SEC ) . The one-year study must include an appraisal of the effectivity of the companyââ¬â¢s internal control construction and processs for fiscal coverage. followed by holding a registered public accounting house ââ¬Å"attest on. and study on the appraisal made by the direction. â⬠This facet of the statute law requires companies to document of import fiscal paperss along with the reappraisal from the certified public accounting house ; it requires enormous attempt and big sums of money for companies to follow with this facet of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act ( Additon. 2011 ) . The writer indicates that companies can utilize the money spent by companies to remain in conformity o n other concerns lines ; making more occupation chances and profiting the economic system. The writer demands that Congress should analyze whether subdivision 404 is needed. and if so. how to cut its dearly-won load on concerns. Modifying or revoking subdivision 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act can liberate concerns to excite the economic system ( Additon. 2011 ) . Businesses must remain in conformity with the jurisprudence to run expeditiously at all times. Companies should remain in conformity to acquire the assurance and trust from investors. The 2012 Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Survey listed where companies stand on reexamining cost. clip. attempts. processes to remain in conformity with the ordinances. Approximately 35 % of midsize organisations spend from $ 100. 000 to $ 500. 000 yearly. and about 80 % spend $ 1 million or less. By twelvemonth four of Sarbanes-Oxley conformity. most organisation are passing $ 100. 000 to $ 500. 000 yearly ( 2012 Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Survey ) ; this is comparatively a little sum of money compared the entire sum the company really makes. The Sarbanes-Oxley act protects the populace from unethical behaviour by companies. If the authorities does non keep companies accountable for their funding. it will take to unconfident investors in the market ; if the populace is non puting in concerns the economic system will non be better. The award the company pays to remain in conformity with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act is at the right monetary value. accomplishing trust. and assurance from the popula ce. MentionsDavid S.
